A gentle conversation about escape routes, shiny distractions, and what The Escapist may be trying to protect.
(Parts Project | The Escapist 1/3 — Awareness)
In the first episode of our Escapist series, Renae and Laura begin meeting the part of us that reaches for somewhere else when the present moment feels too boring, too heavy, too ordinary, too uncertain, or too hard to stay with.
The Escapist does not always physically leave. Sometimes it escapes through attention: scrolling, researching, planning, watching videos, starting something new, imagining a different future, snacking, shopping, working, joking, or looking for the next shiny thing that might bring relief.
And often, this part is not trying to be destructive.
It may be trying to help you find lightness. It may be trying to create a different ending. It may be trying to protect you from disappointment, conflict, heaviness, boredom, limitation, or the fear that relief is never coming.
This episode is an invitation to meet The Escapist with curiosity instead of criticism — and to begin noticing where your attention goes when the present feels hard to stay with.
This week is about awareness, not interruption.
When you notice yourself reaching for a shiny exit, pause and ask:
1) What was happening right before I wanted to leave?
Was I bored, disappointed, overwhelmed, restless, conflicted, tired, uncertain, or emotionally full?
2) Where did my attention want to go?
Scrolling? Snacks? Planning? Shopping? Researching? Starting something new? A fantasy future? A video? A game? Another tab?
3) What feeling might I be trying not to experience?
Boredom, grief, limitation, heaviness, uncertainty, disappointment, conflict, loneliness, or the sense that there is no relief coming?
4) What is this shiny exit promising me?
Relief? Fun? Control? A different ending? A quick reward? Something to look forward to?
5) Is this helping me choose — or is it choosing for me?
You do not have to shame the escape route. You are simply learning how it works.

When I notice myself reaching for the next distraction, plan, possibility, or shiny exit, I will pause and ask:
“What feeling am I hoping not to experience right now?”
