When Worry Thinks It’s Wisdom

A gentle conversation about the part of you that tries to prevent pain by thinking ten steps ahead.

(Parts Project | The Worrier 1/3 — Awareness)

In the first episode of our Worrier series, Renae and Laura explore the part of us that tries to protect by thinking ahead, rehearsing every possibility, and preparing for what could go wrong. The Worrier often believes it is being wise, responsible, and helpful — and sometimes it is. But when worry moves from preparation into looping, spiraling, or preventing action, it may be using energy you actually need for living.

Together, they unpack the difference between worry and anxiety, the protective role of preparation, and why the Worrier often wants an agenda, a plan, or enough information to avoid being caught off guard. This episode is an invitation to meet the Worrier with curiosity, not criticism, and begin noticing what this part is trying to prevent.

In this episode, we explore:

  • The difference between worry and anxiety
  • Why the Worrier often believes it is acting as the “inner warrior”
  • How worry can feel like wisdom, responsibility, or preparation
  • Why uncertainty and lack of information can activate the Worrier
  • The role of rehearsal, practice, and preparation in creating safety
  • How worry tries to prevent shame, embarrassment, failure, or being caught off guard
  • Why the Worrier may fear being “othered” or not belonging
  • How to begin noticing worry in the body before it becomes a full spiral
  • Why the goal is not to eliminate the Worrier, but to help it become an ally instead of an obstacle

The Practice: What Is My Mind Trying to Prevent?

When the Worrier starts turning something over and over, pause and ask:

1) Where do I notice this in my body?

Jaw, shoulders, stomach, hands, breath, chest, throat, blinking, dry mouth?

2) What is my mind trying to prevent right now?

Failure, embarrassment, being unprepared, disappointing someone, being judged, being unsafe?

3) Is there one real action available to me?

Can I ask for an agenda, make a list, prepare once, rehearse, clarify the next step, or gather one piece of information?

4) Or am I spending energy I may need later?

Is this preparation — or is it a loop?

5) What would help the Worrier feel heard without letting it run the whole system?
