No Tiger in the Room: Helping the Worrier Sort Real Danger from Old Fear

A discovery conversation about felt safety, body alarms, and what to do when worry moves from alert into alarm.

(Parts Project | The Worrier 2/3 — Discovery)

In the second episode of our Worrier series, Renae and Laura explore what happens when the body sounds an alarm — even when there may not be an immediate danger right in front of us. Sometimes the Worrier is responding to a real concern. Sometimes it is responding to an old pattern. And sometimes it is responding to the accumulation of stress, uncertainty, and signals your body has been carrying all day.

Together, they talk about the difference between being alert and feeling unsafe, why old experiences can teach the nervous system to scan for danger, and how the Worrier may try to keep you from being harmed, shamed, abandoned, or unprepared. This conversation is not about dismissing fear. It is about learning to pause long enough to ask: Is there an actual tiger in the room? Is this a real signal I need to respect? Or is this an old fear asking for support?

In this episode, we explore:

  • The difference between alertness and feeling unsafe
  • Why the body may react before the mind has language
  • How felt safety is shaped by past experiences, attachment, and learned patterns
  • Why worry can be valid even when there is no immediate action to take
  • How the Worrier tries to protect you from harm, shame, embarrassment, or social rejection
  • The role of reflection and action: why neither one works well alone
  • How over-preparing can become a form of postponing
  • Why naming the “worst case” can sometimes make fear feel more manageable
  • How the fear of being rejected, judged, or “ousted” may sit underneath everyday worry
  • Why the Worrier deserves compassion, even when it is over-functioning

The Practice: Tiger, Signal, or Old Fear?

When your body feels activated or your mind begins scenario-planning, try this gentle sorting practice:

1) Is there an actual tiger in the room?

Is there an immediate danger or urgent action needed right now?

2) Is there a real signal I need to respect?

Is something uncertain, unresolved, unsupported, or asking for wise attention?

3) Is this an old fear or familiar pattern?

Does this feeling remind me of a past moment when I was harmed, shamed, abandoned, surprised, or unprepared?

4) What part of this is real?

What facts do I actually have?

5) What is one wise action — or one support — available now?

Can I take one step, ask one question, get support, pause, breathe, or return when I have more capacity?

Listener Practice (Week 2: Discovery)

Use this as a quick safety-and-discernment check-in:

When my Worrier feels activated, my body usually:

The “tiger” my Worrier is scanning for might be:

One real signal I need to respect is:

One old fear that may be present is:

One wise action or support available to me is:

One gentle practice this week:

When worry rises, I will pause and ask:

“Is this a tiger, a signal, or an old fear?”
