You Aren’t Meant to Carry It All: The Good Helper + Compassion Fatigue

A compassionate look at over-responsibility, identity, and the moment helping starts to cost you.

(Parts Project | The Good Helper 1/3 — Awareness)

In the first episode of our Good Helper series, we meet the part of you that learned to stay safe, loved, and steady by being useful. Renae and Laura explore how “good helping” can quietly become over-responsibility—especially for caregivers and high-capacity humans—and why that slide often leads to compassion fatigue, resentment, and depletion. This is a gentle awareness episode designed to help you notice the difference between helping from health vs. helping from fear, obligation, or scarcity.

You’ll also hear a simple “body compass” practice to help you recognize when your yes is aligned… and when it’s a reflex.

In this episode, we explore:

  • What we mean by the “Good Helper” part (and why it’s not a villain)
  • How helping can become an identity: “the one who never needs help”
  • The invisible rules Good Helpers often live by (and how they form)
  • Why “helping to feel better” can become a cycle that drains you
  • Helping from scarcity/obligation vs. helping from health/expansion
  • Interdependence vs. hyper-independence (and why receiving matters)
  • The early signs of compassion fatigue: depletion, resentment, losing your edge
  • A simple “body compass” check to sense your true yes/no before you commit

The Practice: The Body Compass (Awareness)

When a request comes in, pause and check in with your body before you answer.

  1. Notice the signal - Where do you feel it first (chest, jaw, shoulders, belly, throat)?
  2. Name the quality - Does it feel open/steady… or tight/urgent?
  3. Ask the clarifying question - Am I helping from health/expansion… or from scarcity/obligation/fear?
  4. Choose a gentler response (if needed) - Try: “I need to check my capacity. I’ll get back to you by ___.”

Listener Practice (Week 1: Awareness)

Use this as a quick “Good Helper Profile” starter.

1) My Good Helper shows up most when:

2) My body signal that I’m about to over-commit is:

3) The rule my Good Helper lives by is:

(Example: “Don’t leave anyone hanging.”)

4) I’m helping from… (circle one):

Scarcity / Obligation / Fear — OR — Health / Expansion / Values

5) One tiny experiment this week:

Before I say yes, I will __________________________________________

(Example: take one breath, delay response, offer a smaller yes)
